The dazzling white wooden houses
The romance of a town built by sailors and explorers
The achingly beautiful fjords and archipelago
Risør is one of Europe's best preserved wooden towns, famed for it's dazzling white painted houses. The town was built by wealthy merchants during the sailing ship era, and has been beautifully preserved - there are often sailing ships still moored in the harbour and it is easy to get swept up by the romance of life on the high seas!
There are a couple of good restaurants, cafes, many independent shops selling clothes, art, antiques and interior design. An active community of musicians and artists means there are often events and exhibitions in the town, especially during May, June, July and August.
There are excellent beaches near the centre, and just outside the town is a fabulous archipelago with secluded bays and views across the ocean. Boats can be rented in the town, and kayaks.
Risør is on the south coast, 1.5 hours from Oslo Torp airport, an easy drive or you can take the express bus.
